The towns of Holbrook and Winslow were
established when the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad put its tracks through the area in
1881. Later, during the 1950's, they became well known as stops along US Highway 66.
Functionally, Route 66 was replaced by Interstate 40 in the 1970's, but nostalgia
for that motoring era is still strong. Ranching has maintained an importance here,
as well as the tourism associated with the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest
National Park.
Many logs of petrified
wood can be viewed by visitors to the Petrified Forest National Park.
